Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between thepla and bhakri?
Thepla is a thin Gujarati flatbread made with wheat flour, spices and greens. Bhakri is a thick Maharashtrian flatbread made from one flour, usually rice, jowar or bajra, and hot water, patted by hand and cooked on an iron tawa.
What is tandalachi bhakri?
Tandalachi bhakri is the Marathi name for rice bhakri: a soft flatbread made from rice flour and hot water, popular on the Konkan coast.
What is juwarchi bhakri?
Juwarchi bhakri (jowar or jwari bhakri) is made from sorghum flour and water. It is the bread in the classic Maharashtrian meal zunka-bhakri.
What is the difference between bajra bhakri and bajra rotla?
Both are made from pearl millet flour and water. Bajrichi bhakri is the Maharashtrian style; bajara rotla is the thicker Gujarati style, eaten with garlic chutney and ghee.
Is jowar roti gluten-free?
Jowar (sorghum) contains no gluten, and our jowar bhakri is made from jowar flour and water only. It is made in a kitchen that also uses wheat, so it may contain traces of gluten and may not suit people with coeliac disease.
How long does thepla last?
Our thepla keeps for 2–3 days at room temperature, up to a week in the fridge, and up to 2 months frozen. Bhakri and rotla are best eaten fresh; reheat on a dry tawa for 1–2 minutes each side.
