What is Navratri?

Navratri (meaning nine nights) is celebrated twice a year, with the main autumn celebration — Shardiya Navratri — falling in October. In 2026, Shardiya Navratri begins on 2 October. Over nine days, devotees worship the nine forms of the goddess Durga. Many observe a vrat (fast) during this period, either for all nine days or on specific days within the festival.

Fasting practices vary between families and communities. Some follow a strict liquid-only fast. Others eat specific permitted foods — typically avoiding onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food, and regular grains, instead eating items such as kuttu (buckwheat) flour, singhara (water chestnut) flour, sabudana (tapioca), sendha namak (rock salt), fruits, dairy products, and certain root vegetables.
