Description
What is Ukadiche Modak?
Ukadiche Modak (उकडीचे मोदक) is one of India’s most revered traditional sweets — a steamed dumpling crafted from rice flour, filled with a divine mixture of freshly grated coconut and dark jaggery, delicately spiced with cardamom. “Ukad” means “steamed” in Marathi, distinguishing this purist form from fried varieties. The soft, pleated rice shell gives way to a melt-in-the-mouth filling that is warmly aromatic and naturally sweet.
History & Significance
Modak holds deep cultural and religious significance across Maharashtra and much of India. According to Hindu tradition, Modak is the favourite sweet of Lord Ganesha — the elephant-headed deity of beginnings, wisdom and prosperity. During Ganesh Chaturthi, the ten-day festival celebrated each August–September, thousands of Modak are offered to Ganesha idols and shared among families and communities.
References to Modak appear in ancient texts including the Mudgala Purana, where it is described as the source of all happiness (the word “Modak” itself derives from the Sanskrit root “moda,” meaning joy or bliss). For centuries, Maharashtrian households have passed down the art of shaping these elegant 21-pleated dumplings, each pinched by hand into a distinctive conical tip.
At Sukhadi Kitchen, we honour that tradition — every Modak is shaped by hand using a time-honoured recipe, made fresh to order with no shortcuts and no preservatives.
